Weather Radar

New: Version 5.5.0 now available (Touch screen devices only)

Memory-Map Weather Radar is an application to display live National Weather Service doppler radar images and animated loops from radars located throughout the United States. Radar is the most effective tool to detect precipitation, especially thunderstorms, and has been used by NWS forecasters since the 1940's. Memory-Map now brings this information, conveniently and efficiently, right to your phone or PDA.

If you take part in, or organize, any kind of outdoor activity, it is always worth keeping an eye on the radar. Whether you are planning a picnic, racing a sailboat, or painting your house, a rain squall can spoil your day! The radar gives you an accurate picture of the weather that is heading your way in the next two or three hours, and can help you make best use of the day.

With Memory-Map Weather Radar, when you update the image, the radar data is downloaded as a compressed overlay, without having to download the whole base image each time. There are no usage fees or subscriptions for using the service, except your mobile carrier's normal data access fees. If the sky is clear, the download is only 1 or 2 kbytes; if there is widespread rain, it might be 10 kbytes. The first time you view each radar station, the base map image is downloaded, which is 50 to 100kbytes.

Animated loops of radar images help you judge the speed and direction of the weather systems. To help optimize the download speed, you can select how many images to use in the loop, and the time interval between frames.

Other mobile sources of the radar images only give you a tiny thumbnail image. This application gives you the highest resolution available, and you can scroll and zoom the image to see all the detail on your mobile device screen.

Interpreting the radar image does take a little practice. It is best to familiarize yourself with the technology and your local weather patterns using the NWS website www.weather.gov before using it on your phone.

Weather Radar Wherever You Go by Jim from Olive Branch, Mississippi on Sep 18, 2007

The product is excellent, providing accurate weather radar at most locations in the US. Used it recently on a trip to Boston -- helped plan the day and monitor conditions.

Local weather on your phone  by charlie from panama city beach, florida on Aug 12, 2007

This product is great real time weather radar that is up to date and as good as any weaher radar I have seen in 30 years in the US Air Force.

Excellent product... and fast!   by Steve M from Tennessee on Jul 13, 2007

After downloading, was able to install easily. Accessed and downloaded base map after a little head scratching (online through mobile to PC connection). This little program works great. Had some rough weather I needed to monitor, and had no problems downloading the radar loops onto the base map. It is accurate and fast. About 10-15 seconds of airtime to download a loop. Everyone I showed it to loved it.

Gotta get!!  by a reviewer from Oklahoma on Apr 6, 2007

This program is a great program. There are continual updates and the program works the way it is supposed to. I use it everyday and can't imagine having my TyTN without it. GOOD JOB guys!

The other reviews say it all!   by Nicholas Sabalos Jr. from Springfield, VA on Mar 7, 2007

The other reviews of Memory-Map say it all: this is one GREAT piece of software! Forget all the weather subscriptions and other complicated programs; when it comes down to SERIOUS weather, there's nothing like having LIVE doppler radar from the National Weather Service right there with you, no matter where you are. Try this, buy it! It could save you a lot of trouble when the weather turns nasty.

A really great program for weather junkies  by Lorenzo from SD, CA on Dec 17, 2006

We recently had a storm come through our area and it included some extreme weather. Memory map also outlines extreme storms which is something I didn't expect. It shows the path of the storm and boxes it for extreme or tornado's. It works really well and I'm glad that I purchased it.

GREAT WEATHER RADAR TRACKER!  by Rick D. Michaels from Alvin, Texas! on Dec 1, 2006

If your into watching the weather and want a handy WEATHER RADAR with you at all times this is the application for you. Works EXCELLENT and you can choose just about ANY PLACE in the country to see the weather they are having. I have experienced NO problems at all with this application working properly and it's definitely worth the asking price!

Very Useful for the Cheap Price!   by JE from Reno, NV on Nov 26, 2006

No subscription fees to worry about! Animating the radar will make you a weather forecaster and plan your trips and avoid bad weather, without having to wait for radio or tv weather announcements, also shows the major highways and cities (Continental US plus Hawaii and Guam, Puerto Rico and Alaska) where precipitation could be headed. I wish all good software are in this price range!

Best thing I've loaded since their Pocket Navigator!!!  by Stenn from Gambrills, MD on Nov 16, 2006

These people at Memory-Map keep pumping out fantastic stuff! I installed their Pocket Navigator a few months ago, and that's fantastic for syncing with my GPS and seeing where I am on the Chesapeake while sailing...and now they've come out with the icing on the cake, "Memory-Map Weather Radar," the coolest thing since sliced bread (or my Samsung i730 ;) I'm really grateful for the price too, you'd have to be a real cheapskate to not buy this, it's an offer you should NOT refuse! Yes, you can connect to some weather websites and get your radar that way, but it's MUCH slower, AND very tiny, you can't get a full screen of radar by going to a website, but you CAN with Memory-Map's Weather Radar, AND it's zoomable, AND scrollable...too cool! Definitely 5 stars!

Outstanding for $10 !  by a reviewer from New Orleans, LA on Oct 21, 2006

I'm picky about PPC software, but this one sure is a must have! The accuracy is spot on as I compare it to images from the NWS on my desktop. They are exact, except for the smaller screen of my hw6945. In the next version, I will look forward to "automatic refreshing". As it is, you must manually click the reload button to get an updated image and or animation.

Works exactly like it is supposed to  by Don from Longmont, Colorado on Sep 24, 2006

Not a lot to say other than this product works exactly as it is supposed to work. You pick the site, it gets the latest radar image, or if you prefer...it gets a series of them an animates them. I used it on a recent trip through the mid-west. Looked a day ahead at various sites to see what the local weather was relative to precipitation. Worked perfectly. I see exactly what I see if I go to the Weather Bureau web site. Perfect...and for the price...absolutely perfect!

TOTALLY MINT!!!! A MUST DOWNLOAD!!!  by MarK from NY on Sep 19, 2006

This software is great.. I love the pda format and how clear and useful the program is.......MUST BUY!!!!

A Must-Have Program  by John from New Bedford, Ma. on Aug 24, 2006

I've had Memory-Map Weather for a while now and really find it useful!! It does a LOT for such a small program. Give it a shot, I'm sure you'll enjoy it as well !

Wow! What a great way to get radar on the go   by Jared DiPierro from Port Jefferson Station, New York on Jul 18, 2006

I am the type of person who doesnt care about the temperature humidity or anything like that. I really only watch the weather for radar. This product is amazing. You simply put in your closest NOAA weather center (I.E New York City's closest NOAA center is White Plains and/or Upton NY) and once that is in you just need a GPRS/Wifi or direct computer internet connection and you will know if there is a storm or just clouds within about a 200 mile radius. You can either choose to see a solid non moving radar or actual In-motion radar. I absoloutly love this product!

Requirements

The Doppler radar imagery is available for the United States only. Coverage includes AK, HI and various US territories.

You need a Microsoft Windows Mobile device:

Your device must have an available internet connection. Usually, this is the built-in cellular wireless data service (GPRS), but any means that allows the built-in web browser to access the internet will also work for Memory-Map Weather Radar.

What's New

Version 5.5.0

Due to a change in the way the NWS web farm handles directory requests, the older versions became unreliable. This version fixes the problem.

Version 5.3.3

Just a couple of tweaks to resolve a problem that can cause the application to lock up, and a problem with it failing to download the latest data. Sorry for any inconvenience... we hope this release is solid!

Version 5.3.2

Version 5.2.0

We have added an Auto-Update feature to keep the display continuously up to date with the latest radar images. You can now choose from the full range of radar image types, including short and long range reflectivity, composite reflectivity, velocity and accumulated precipitation. In addition, there is a Storage dialog that allows you to place the cached images on a storage card, and delete unwanted images. The update is free of charge.

Version 5.1.3

By popular request, we have added the ability to display selected layers (roads, cities & county/state boundaries) on top of the radar image. This allows you to see your location relative to the storm, even when the radar image is full of precipitation. We also now display NWS warning polygons, to alert you to possible severe weather.
