The iPaq 4705 is currently the best available Pocket PC
for use with our software. It has a large, bright, clearly visible screen,
and the high resolution display makes the maps look really sharp. Memory-Map
does not try to compete with the high-volume electronics retailers, so
we suggest you buy the iPAQ 4705 from an online discount store (eg Mobile Planet). Model 4700 is identical - just different
packaging.
Everything else you need for the system is available right here...
Nearly as good, and quite a bit less expensive is the Dell Axim X51v. Everything listed here will work with the Dell or the iPaq.
For land use, buy the Memory-Map Discoverer topo maps for your region. If you want to use downloaded maps as well, you can upgrade to a full Navigator license when you have registered the Discoverer software.
For marine use, buy Memory-Map Navigator, and download the NOAA charts free.
For hiking, and other outdoor activities where you need a single handheld unit, buy the CF or SD card GPS.
For a fixed-mount system (in a vehicle or boat's wheelhouse or nav station) where a 12V supply is available, buy the Mouse GPS with windshield mount. Other mounting options are available.
If you already have a different model of PDA that has an SDIO slot but no CF slot, buy the SD GPS with memory.
If you are going to use the system outdoors, we highly recommend a waterproof / dustproof case:
The soft case is lightweight and fine for most uses: get the Aquapac PDA Classic +Plus.
If you feel the unit may get knocked about or crushed, get the Otterbox 1900. You will need the large cap to house the CF or SD card GPS.
Other accessories you might need:
You will need an SD memory card to store the maps. We suggest 512MB.
Street Navigation software for on-road use (eg, TomTom)
Spare or extended battery or external AA battery box.
Combined 12V Charge / USB Sync cable
